Very good, that CB devs. are willing to make upcoming versions a variable FOV. Thank God for that. ;-)
Here is my point of view, and I make it exagerated so you get my point:
This is what is happening in CB at the moment:
80% of the time we are shooting at very little black dots - that´s our enemies. These little black bots kill us as well. No fun.
20% of the time we actually get to see an normal sized enemy. Good fun.
(because of this matter, IMO more players are encouraged to choose the sniper rifel. No fun.)
Most CB maps have a huge depth, compared to other FPS MP shooter games - that might be one reason for it. But there is more to it.
Test this:
Stay at a building look at another one and estimate how many fodsteps it will take you to get to the other building.
Then walk the distance. With 20 steps you managed an estimated distance like a 100 meters or so with the actual FOV 70. Lowering the FOV would help this..god I´m not the boss here, we´d play with a FOV 35..
What I´m saying is, compared to COD we should have a FOV of 30.
Compared to BF3 it would be a 50 or so. But check for yourself.
Well - CB is different to the two mentioned games, and it should be. Still - CB would become more fun to play with a lower FOV.
Watch youtube gameplay of other MP FPS and do a FOV compare. Just watch the gameplay and think about the FOV.
Then open a CB server, make it private, type con_restricted 0 in the console followed by a cl_fov 30 or a cl_fov 50 cl_fov 70 or even a cl_fov 90
Run arround a bit, do a little aiming and shooting and try to find out, what you´d prefere actually.
But anyways.. like I stated in the very beginning of this post:
